French Bulldog Puppy Development: Weeks 5–6

What do 5–6 week old French Bulldog puppies do? At Kiki Leigh Frenchies, this is the age when our Frenchie puppies become playful, curious, and full of personality as they begin learning important social skills, exploring their surroundings, and transitioning to solid food.

Weeks five and six are the some of the most magical in a puppy’s life. At Kiki Leigh Frenchies, this is the time when our little potatoes truly begin to transform into playful, curious puppies with uniquie, invididual personalities.

By this age, puppies are fully entering the socialization stage, when they begin learning how to interact with their world, their littermates, and people. This period is critical for developing healthy temperament and confidence later in life.

Let’s take a look at what typically happens with French Bulldog puppies during weeks 5 and 6.

Physical Development

By five to six weeks old, puppies experience several noticeable physical milestones.

At this stage puppies have their full set of baby teeth, which means chewing becomes a favorite activity. Their coordination improves rapidly, and they become much more active as they run, tumble, and wrestle with their littermates.

Their senses are now fully developed, allowing them to explore the world with curiosity and confidence.

During this stage puppies also begin eating several small meals of softened puppy food each day while gradually nursing less from their mother as the weaning process continues.

At Kiki Leigh Frenchies, this is when the puppy area suddenly feels like a tiny circus. What was once a quiet whelping box becomes a playground filled with zoomies, tiny growls, and dramatic wrestling matches.

Social Skills and Learning

One of the most important things happening during weeks 5–6 is social learning.

Puppies begin developing essential communication skills through constant interaction with both their littermates and their mother. Through play they start learning how hard is too hard when biting, how to read body language, and how to communicate appropriately with other dogs.

Their mother plays a very important role during this stage as well. She helps teach the puppies good manners by correcting behavior when they become too rough or pushy. A gentle growl, a nudge, or simply walking away can teach puppies important lessons about boundaries and respectful behavior.

At Kiki Leigh Frenchies, we take this stage very seriously because these weeks help shape the kind of companions our puppies will become. In addition to time with their littermates, we gradually begin introducing the puppies to the everyday sights and sounds of a real home.

By five to six weeks old, the puppies are no longer confined only to the whelping area. They begin spending supervised time exploring different parts of the house and yard, learning about the world around them.

They might wander into the kitchen, scoot under the dining room table, or investigate a broom leaning against the wall. Socks become exciting treasures, chair legs become climbing challenges, and littermates become wrestling partners.

Curiosity and Personality

Around five weeks old, puppies begin showing much more confidence and curiosity about the world. They start approaching new objects, exploring new textures, and reacting to sounds.

This is often when their individual personalities really begin to shine. At Kiki Leigh Frenchies, we spend a lot of hands-on time with the puppies during this stage. They enjoy climbing on things, running and hiding under furniture and pretty much make a game out of anything and everything.

They are wonderfully silly at this age. One moment they are wrestling in a pile with their siblings, and the next moment they are proudly trotting across the room carrying a slipper twice their size or attacking the broom.

French Bulldogs are especially known for being very people-oriented dogs, and this is often the stage where that affectionate nature begins to show. Many puppies actively seek out human attention and enjoy being held, cuddled, or simply sitting nearby while the household activity goes on around them. There is never a shortage of puppy kisses and snuggles at this age!

The Weaning Process Continues

By five to six weeks old, the puppies at Kiki Leigh Frenchies have settled into a regular feeding routine. At this stage they are eating four meals a day, spaced throughout the day from about 8 a.m. to 8 p.m., with a small snack before bedtime.

The puppies are confident eaters by this age, and mealtime becomes a lively part of the day as they gather around the food dish together.

Around this stage we also begin introducing very small, simple treats. At Kiki Leigh Frenchies, our puppies’ first treats are usually tiny pieces of low-fat mozzarella or a few pieces of SmartPop cheddar popcorn.

Mom still plays an important role during this time as well. She typically gives the puppies a couple of snack visits during the day, continuing to reinforce good manners while gradually encouraging their independence.

By six weeks old, the puppies are eating well, growing quickly, and developing the healthy appetites that support their rapid growth.
