French Bulldog Puppy Growth Guide: Week 1

Feeding and Nursing Support in Week 1

Most Frenchie puppies nurse directly from their mother, and for many litters, that is all that is needed.

However, in some cases, smaller puppies may benefit from temporary supplemental feeding, especially if they are:

  • Struggling to latch

  • Falling behind in weight gain

  • Competing with larger littermates

  • Becoming tired during nursing

When supplementation is needed, it is typically done in very small amounts (just a few mL at a time), while still prioritizing nursing whenever possible.

In our nursery at Kiki Leigh Frenchies, the goal is always gentle support while allowing puppies to remain with their mother as much as possible.

What's Normal in Week 1

Thriving Week 1 puppies often show:

✅ Full, round bellies after nursing

✅ Warm bodies when resting with the litter

✅ Strong rooting and sucking instincts

✅ Gradual weight gain over several days

Every puppy develops at their own pace, but steady progress is what we look for most.

When Breeders Watch More Closely

A breeder may intervene or consult a veterinarian if a puppy is:

🚩 Not gaining weight for 24 hours

🚩 Losing weight two days in a row

🚩 Feeling cool to the touch

🚩 Too weak to nurse effectively

🚩 Crying constantly despite nursing attempts

Early intervention in Week 1 can make a significant difference, and careful monitoring is one of the most important responsibilities of a breeder during this stage.

Final Thoughts: Week 1 Sets the Foundation

The first week of life is all about warmth, nourishment, and vigilance. With careful monitoring, consistent nursing, and early support when needed, most puppies settle in beautifully and begin thriving.

At Kiki Leigh Frenchies, we believe these early days are the foundation for raising strong, healthy, happy French Bulldogs — and we are honored to provide the constant care these newborns deserve.
