Week 2 French Bulldog Puppy Milestones: Early Growth (Days 8–14)

Week 2 is a beautiful in-between stage in a French Bulldog puppy’s early life. The puppies are still very fragile and completely dependent on their mother, but this is often the week when breeders begin to see the very first signs of strengthening and change.
The days are still filled with nursing, sleeping, and warmth — but Week 2 is when tiny newborns begin their slow transition from simply surviving to quietly growing and developing.
At Kiki Leigh Frenchies, this is one of our favorite weeks to watch, because the smallest milestones start to appear right before your eyes.
Developmental Changes in Week 2
During the second week, French Bulldog puppies begin to show subtle but exciting developmental progress.
This is often the stage when their world starts to “open” little by little. Puppies may begin to:
Open their eyes (usually between Days 10–14)
Begin opening their ears, which are also closed at birth
Wiggle and crawl with more strength
Roll and scoot within the whelping area
Push themselves up on tiny legs for the first time
These changes are gentle and gradual, but they are meaningful signs that puppies are developing well and gaining strength each day.
Weight Gain in Week 2
By Week 2, weight gain often becomes more consistent, and many puppies begin to settle into a steadier growth pattern.
Many French Bulldog puppies will nearly double their birth weight by around 10–14 days of age.
Daily monitoring remains important, especially in litters where some puppies are significantly smaller than others.
At Kiki Leigh Frenchies, we continue weighing each puppy carefully and watching trends closely. These early numbers help us ensure that every baby is thriving — and that no puppy is quietly falling behind.
Nursing Patterns and “Special Time with Mom”
Puppies continue nursing frequently throughout Week 2, but breeders may begin to notice:
Stronger latch and nursing stamina
More movement and competition in the box
Smaller puppies benefiting from quieter, focused nursing time
In our nursery, we often give smaller puppies what we lovingly call “private nursing time” — a special moment with mom without the bigger littermates climbing over them.
It’s a simple but powerful way to support the tiniest puppies, and it’s one of the many ways breeders help ensure that everyone gets the strongest start possible.
What a Healthy Week 2 Puppy Looks Like
By the end of Week 2, thriving French Bulldog puppies are often:
✅ Plump and steadily gaining weight
✅ Crawling and scooting more strongly
✅ Sleeping peacefully between feedings
✅ Warm, content, and well-nourished
✅ Settled comfortably with mom and littermates
Week 2 is still a delicate stage, but it is also a week of quiet progress.
Final Thoughts: Week 2 Brings Early Strength

The second week of life is a time of strengthening, steady growth, and the very first developmental milestones.
With careful monitoring, consistent nursing, and supportive care, puppies continue to thrive beautifully during this stage.
At Kiki Leigh Frenchies, we believe these early weeks are the foundation for raising strong, healthy, happy French Bulldogs — and we feel incredibly honored to be right beside them through every tiny change.
